We were delighted to welcome our latest Taste Waterford member in October 2024 – Ní Bhrian Restaurant in Kilmacthomas.
Our project manager Richard Povey met with the owners, and discovered a hidden gem in this beautiful Co. Waterford town.
Here’s their story…
Sisters Helen and Jenny O’Brien have always worked in catering and share a passion for food.
So it was an easy decision for them to come together and launch a café in Fenor during May 2020.
Jenny, head chef, said: “I’d been running a restaurant in Kill until 2019, and quickly wanted to get back into owning a restaurant again. We had a great time in Fenor, and developed lovely relationships with our customers.”

During 2023, an opportunity presented itself in Kilmacthomas and they decided to move.
“It was right next to the Waterford Greenway, and already operated as a café and auction house before – so the position was already well-established”, said Jenny.
They opened their doors again in February 2024 and their loyal customers quickly followed.

Helen, who runs front of house, explained: “It’s about serving great food, and making our customers feel valued. It’s casual and informal here – we’re always ready for a chat!”
The food of course takes centre stage – based on traditional Irish with a modern twist. There are classic dishes, along with specials that ensure when dining, you’ll always have a new option to choose.

A star attraction on the menu is Jenny’s chicken curry. She said: “I created the recipe 16 years ago – and haven’t changed it as customers love it so much!”
You’ll find other firm favourites too like creamy seafood chowder, range of burgers, open sandwiches, and pasta. There’s also a selection of desserts.
It’s clear when you talk with them both that homemade and local are two areas important to them.
Helen said: “We use many suppliers, including Walsh’s Bakehouse, Mean Bean Coffee, Barefoot Farm and the Dungarvan Brewing Company – and always looking at new producers too.
“And Jenny makes the sauces, gravy, desserts, bread and stocks.”

Another key aspect with their cooking is having a menu as inclusive as possible for all.
Being allergen-friendly isn’t an afterthought at Ní Bhrian Restaurant – it shapes their menu.
They’ll always consider people’s food intolerances – including vegan and vegetarian. And if a dish isn’t suitable (which we’re sure it will be) they’ll do what they can to accommodate diners.
Jenny is also looking at new ways to introduce plant-based dishes on the menu.
The interior is a welcoming space with plenty of dining areas to suit your mood. There’s an outside seating area perfect for warmer days and cosy evenings. And there’s a more intimate space at the front with views over Main Street.

Their friendly attitude to dining extends to their team too. They take on young recruits and give them a job. With training and skills, they build life skills and confidence to help them develop.
And for the future? Jenny said: “We’re planning on running a curry evening soon – with three dishes to choose from – it’ll be some night!”

Open Thursday – Saturday 1.00pm – 8.30pm. Sunday and Bank Holiday – 12.30pm – 6.00pm.
